It is a vivid Victorian family drama based on previously untouched archives, set in Herefordshire on the border between England and Wales. Its hero, the landowner Johnny Arkwright, proved powerless to resist the myriad forces making agriculture unprofitable. By 1870 he was writing: ‘I am in an awful state of depression which nothing but champagne can remove.’
